Brushing is a simple, familiar habit that most of us manage every day. Flossing can feel a little more involved, and many people find it tedious enough to skip. But while flossing takes a bit more effort, it delivers real benefits, and with a little practice it only takes a minute or two, especially when you take advantage of modern alternatives to traditional floss.
Why Flossing Matters
Your toothbrush does a great job cleaning the chewing surfaces and the fronts and backs of your teeth. What it can't do is reach the tight spaces between your teeth, and those spaces are just as prone to plaque and tartar as any other part of your mouth. Flossing is what cleans those gaps, helping prevent cavities and gum disease in places a brush simply can't reach.
How to Floss
If you're using traditional floss, start with about 18 inches. Wind most of it around one finger to anchor it, then hold a short working length between your fingers and thumbs. Gently guide the floss between two teeth using a soft rubbing motion, taking care not to snap it down against the gums. Once it's between the teeth, rub along the side of each tooth and work your way toward the gumline. At the gum, curve the floss into a "C" shape and slide it gently just beneath the gumline to clean that area.
Repeat this for every tooth, paying special attention to the back teeth, where food is most likely to collect.
Try a Water Flosser
If traditional flossing is difficult for you, a water flosser is a worthwhile alternative. While it doesn't provide quite the same mechanical scraping action as string floss, its high-pressure stream of water is effective at removing plaque and rinsing out the pockets along the gumline in a way that floss can't. For many people, the ideal routine combines brushing with either traditional floss or a water flosser, and even using both.
